Complications Related to Yaz
Like the similar oral contraceptive Yasmin, Yaz is manufactured by Bayer and contains drospirenone. Drospirenone is a synthetic ingredient that can help prevent unwanted pregnancy, but it can also cause a dangerous elevation of potassium levels and result in severe side-effects including:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pulmonary embolism
- Gall bladder complications
- Heart attack
- Liver damage
Although Yaz was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an oral contraceptive, it has also been prescribed to treat acne and the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. Yaz and Yasmin are the focus of a number of product liability lawsuits that claim Bayer did not adequately warn consumers of risks associated with the birth control pills and downplayed some known side-effects.
Complications Related to NuvaRing
NuvaRing is a small, ring-like contraceptive that is inserted into the vagina. Over the course of three weeks, NuvaRing releases a continuous low dose of estrogen and progestin to help suppress ovulation. Since its approval by the FDA in 2001, NuvaRing has been linked to serious and potentially deadly side-effects including:
- Increased risk for heart attack
- Increased risk for stroke
- Increased risk for liver cancer
- Increased risk for gallbladder disease
- Increased risk for high blood pressure
- Blood clots, including those that lead to deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism
- Vaginal infection
Merck, the manufacturer of NuvaRing, currently faces a number of lawsuits alleging the company concealed health risks associated with NuvaRing.
