Pelvic Organ Prolapse

HOUSTON TRANSVAGINAL MESH ATTORNEY

One of the most common uses of transvaginal mesh is the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP), a condition in which one or more of a woman’s pelvic organs drops, or prolapses, and places pressure against the vaginal wall.

Unfortunately, many women who underwent the surgical repair of POP with transvaginal mesh have since suffered severe complications. If you suffered health problems after receiving transvaginal mesh, Houston product liability attorney Tony Malley may be able to help you seek financial compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost income and other related damages.

PELVIC ORGAN PROLAPSE SYMPTOMS

The bladder is the most common organ involved in POP, but any pelvic organ, including the urethra, uterus, small bowel or rectum may prolapse after childbirth or a hysterectomy.

Common symptoms of POP include:

  • Pressure against the vaginal wall
  • A constant feeling of fullness in the lower belly
  • Pain during sex
  • Groin or lower back pain
  • Incontinence
  • Constipation

Although POP has been widely treated with the surgical placement of transvaginal mesh, these dangerous medical devices are often ineffective and can lead to complications, including the recurrence of pelvic organ prolapse.

TREATING POP WITH TRANSVAGINAL MESH

POP is caused by a weakening or stretching of the muscles that hold your pelvic organs in place. When POP is severe, it can cause significant pain and result in persistent bladder or bowel problems.

In POP treatment, transvaginal mesh is used to help support the vaginal wall and hold pelvic organs in place. However, increasing evidence indicates that many transvaginal mesh devices are prone to moving, hardening or eroding after surgical placement, which can lead to complications including:

  • Infection
  • Internal bleeding
  • Organ damage
  • Recurrence of POP

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also received reports of at least seven deaths associated with the use of transvaginal mesh to treat POP.
